RESEARCH AND RESULTS
ΕΡΕΥΝΕΣ ΚΑΙ ΑΠΟΤΕΛΕΣΜΑΤΑ

The Attiki-Pittas Quality Assurance Department began operating in its current form in 1990 and currently employs agronomists and food technologists. It is fully equipped to carry out all required controls in order to ensure compliance with legal requirements, production specifications and academic research. Attiki-Pittas is certified under the Food Safety Management System FSSC 22000. In order to safeguard the unrivalled quality of the Greek honey and to further highlight its distinctive characteristics and properties, the Quality Assurance Department conducts research in collaboration with universities, research centers and institutes. In addition, ongoing funding is allocated to research on beekeeping processes and practices.

Representative research projects that have been carried out in collaboration with universities:
  • Upgrading pastures through the reintroduction of thyme and other bee-friendly plant species.
  • Development of mapping methods and reliable identification and quality assessment of honeys in Greece (PABET 2000).
  • Design and development of new biofunctional foods and food supplements based on the Mediterranean diet and the biodiversity of Greek flora (“Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship” Operational Program - in Greek EPAN).
  • Study of the quality of traditional Greek foods and the industrialization of their production (“Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship” Operational Program - in Greek EPAN).
  • Development of methods for evaluating the properties of Greek bee products (honey, royal jelly, pollen) (Industrial Research and Technology Development Program – in Greek PABET 2005).
  • Study of the chemical composition and evaluation of the properties of Greek honeys and royal jelly on the Greek market .
  • Application in the production of improved, high-added-value products with enhanced biological activity (NSRF).
  • Effect of honey on obese childrens’ diet, Agia Sophia Children’s Hospital (PhD thesis).
  • Extensive research using honey samples provided by the Company’s Quality Assurance Department.
  • Encapsulation of honey and aromatic plant extracts for the development of innovative products by the Department of Food Chemistry of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, funded by the Region of Attica.
