Jul Glogg

(Makes 10-12 glasses)

A mulled wine served hot, with raisins, honey and almonds. It is a traditional Swedish Christmas drink.

Ingredients

  • 1½ litres high octane red wine
  • peel from 1 orange and 1 lemon
  • 400g raki (an anise-flavoured spirit) or vodka
  • 100g white raisins
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 5 cardamom pods
  • 1 cinnamon stick (+-7cm)
  • 10 cloves
  • 20 almonds

Method

Warm the wine in a saucepan with the lemon and orange peel, half the raki or vodka, the honey, sugar and raisins.

Split the cardamom pods and place in muslin with the cloves and cinnamon stick. Add the potpourri of spices to the wine, cover and bring to the boil. Remove from heat and uncover after 10’. Add the rest of the raki (or vodka) and remove the spices. Pour the glögg over the almonds in the glasses. Serve while hot.
