Pollen is the fertilising element of flowering plants. Pollen grains have a wall that protects the sperm cells as they move from the androecium (stamens) to the gynoecium (pistil). Bees consume pollen, as it is an excellent source of proteins, vitamins and minerals. Bees collect pollen from various flowering plants and transport it to the hive in a special "pollen basket" or corbicula located on their hind legs. Beekeepers position special "pollen traps" at the entrance to the hive so that the pollen on the hind legs of the returning bees is dislodged.
Pollen is an essential part of man's diet as it is rich in proteins, amino acids, sugars, minerals, vitamins, flavonoids and other compounds of immense biological importance for the human body.
